I came into this world small but deeply loved. I was placed into foster care as a baby, and my very first foster mama was a single woman who devoted her life to fostering children. She loved me so well, and I was safe in her care during the earliest part of my story. When my case plan shifted toward adoption, she helped connect my now Mom and Dad to my life. I was only ten months old when I transitioned into my forever family, so I don’t remember much from that time, but I know that was the moment my life changed forever. When I was two years old, I was officially adopted and became an Espino.

I kept the first name my birth mother gave me, Zuri, which comes from the Swahili language and means “beautiful in character and appearance.” My middle name was changed to Hope, which always reminds me and everyone who knows me that there is always hope. My name carries my story in such a special way.

When I was little, I qualified for speech, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. I received these services until I was three years old, and they helped me learn, grow, and gain confidence in my body and my voice. Those early supports gave me tools that still serve me today.

When I was eight, I received a diagnosis of ADHD. ADHD means that my brain works a little differently. It can be harder for me to focus, sit still for long periods, or slow my thoughts down sometimes. It also means I have lots of energy, creativity, and big feelings. Receiving this diagnosis helped answer important questions and allowed me to receive extra support during my school day so I can learn in the ways that work best for me.

I love being outside and would stay forever if I could! I love to draw and do crafts, and one of my very favorite things is helping our little kindergartner neighbors on and off the school bus. Hiking, swimming, and going to the beach fill my heart with so much joy. I love movement, fresh air, and being surrounded by people.

This is my short story. Rooted in love. Carried by hope. Still growing.
