World Autism Awareness Day: Jude’s Autism Journey, Challenges, and Extraordinary Mind
Meet Jude: The Heart Behind Jude&Jojos Photography
Before anything else, there is Jude.
Jude made his entrance into this world quietly… but not easily. He was what doctors called a “blue baby,” having episodes where he would stop breathing for more than 20 seconds at a time. At six months old, we finally had a name for part of the fear: laryngomalacia. For his entire first year, he slept with a heart monitor, tiny wires attached to his body, and nights were spent listening for every breath.
As he grew, the gaps started to show. Milestones that didn’t quite line up. At three years old, during what was supposed to be a routine appointment, everything shifted. Jude failed his eye exam, and not just slightly. The moment he put on his glasses for the first time will never be forgotten. The way he looked at the world… the way he looked at his family. It felt like a first meeting.
But that was only the beginning of his story.
Jude was later diagnosed with Receptive Language Disorder, and as therapy began, more pieces unfolded. EEGs and MRIs revealed partial epilepsy in his left temporal lobe, along with a rare brain difference, Incomplete Hippocampal Inversion, impacting how he processes memory and information.
And then, the diagnosis that connected so many of the dots, Autism, Level 2.
Today, Jude spends 16 hours a week with a therapist by his side. Each day, helping him build a bridge to a world that doesn’t always come naturally to him. And still, he shows up with joy. With curiosity. With a light that refuses to dim.
Right now, Jude is stepping into a new chapter. As kindergarten approaches, we are navigating what a new normal looks like through a hybrid school setting. After facing rejection from multiple private schools and knowing he isn’t prepared for a traditional public setting, this season holds both uncertainty and resilience, something many families in this community know all too well.
There are also the parts that often go unseen.
Like many children in the autism community, Jude has seasons of self-harm and moments where frustration turns inward. While he communicates in his own way, much of it comes in puzzle pieces. There are times he can’t express if he’s sick, where something hurts, or if someone has been unkind. Often, those answers reveal themselves later through stimming or subtle shifts in behavior.
And still… there is so much beauty in how his mind works.
Because while Jude may struggle to put on his socks, get his pajamas on after a bath, or understand what “tomorrow” means… he knows what we mean when we say “how many sleeps.” He knows what a sarcophagus is. He understands how the Titanic sank and which boiler rooms went down first. He connects through Einaudi. He doesn’t just hear music… he feels it inside of his brain.
Jude is beyond intelligent. The way he thinks, processes, and connects to the world is something to be in awe of. He loves ships, history, and anything Titanic, not just as an interest, but as a deep, immersive understanding that shapes how he experiences the world around him.
Jude experiences the world differently.
And in that difference, there is depth. There is brilliance. There is a story that deserves to be seen, understood, and celebrated.
We cannot wait to see what he accomplishes in his lifetime.
Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we celebrate Jude for who he is, exactly as he is. 💙
